The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a handheld game console manufactured and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Development of the console was first announced during E3 2003, and it was unveiled on May 11, 2004 at a Sony press conference before E3 2004. The system was released in Japan on December 12, 2004, in North America on March 24, 2005, and in the PAL region on September 1, 2005.
How to find out what model PSP you have
Currently there are three different models of PSP in circulation, being the original PSP (PSP-1000), the Slim and Lite (PSP-2000) and the latest PSP-3000 series.
The easiest way to differentiate between the models is to remove the battery cover and battery, and check the label inside the cavity.

PSP Original (PSP-1000, PSP Phat)
Weighing in at 280g the PSP original is the largest and heaviest of the PSP consoles. It boasts a large 4.3", 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD screen and extensive multimedia capabilities including the ability to play mp3s, videos, games and surf the internet. The console is easiliy identifiable by the rounded, matt back.

PSP Slim and Lite (PSP-2000, PSP Lite)
The PSP Slim and Lite is 33% lighter and 19% thinner than the original PSP. This redesign also features charging via USB, double the onboard RAM (32 MB to 64 MB), and has a brighter screen. This is identifiable by its flat, gloss back and the ability to pull the UMD door open as opposed to a needing a switch.

PSP 3000
Based on the Slim & Lite (PSP-2000) design, the PSP-3000 features an improved LCD screen, a built-in microphone, oval shaped start and select buttons and an expanded video-out. The LCD screen features a higher contrast ratio, shorter response time, and wider color gamut, as well as anti-reflective technology for improved visibility in well-lit environments. Whilst looking similar to the PSP Slim, the console is is identifiable by the 3mm thick metallic ring on the UMD door.
