The internal back up battery is intended to maintain stored memory during a battery swap of the main removable iPAQ battery. The back up battery will last approximately 30 minutes. If your iPAQ hard resets during a battery swap and looses all data stored in RAM your internal back up battery may have failed. Replacing this internal battery with a brand new HP iPAQ part will solve your problem.
