The iPhone is a multimedia smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The iPhone was originally announced on January 9, 2007. The original iPhone was introduced in the United States on June 29, 2007 before being marketed worldwide. Released on July 11 2008 the iPhone 3G supports faster 3G data speeds and assisted GPS. The iPhone 3GS was announced on June 8 2009 and includes a faster processor, 3 megapixel camera and built in compass. The iPhone 4 has two cameras for FaceTime video calling and a higher-resolution display, it was released on June 24, 2010. The iPhone 4S was released on October 14, 2011 with the introduction of Siri a voice controled assistant. The iPhone 5 was released on September 21, 2012 supporting a 4 inch screen and selling five million units in the first three days of release.
How to find out what model iPhone you have
Currently there are six different models of iPhone in circulation, being the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and the new iPhone 5 The best way to distinguish which iPhone you have is to check the iPhones rear casing.

iPhone Original
The iPhone original comes in 16GB, 8 GB or 4 GB varieties, and is easily recognised by the silver metal back. This is Apples first mobile phone and is similar in size to the iPod Touch. The iPhone original features similar functionalities to iPod Touch, however it also includes phone connectivity. The iPhone includes a built in 2 megapixel camera, a multi-touch screen, real internet Wi-Fi, and many other functions. The model number on the back case is A1203, the back case is made of metal, the serial number is etched in the back case.

iPhone 3G
The iPhone 3G comes in 8GB and 16GB varieties and is recognisable by its sleek curved back, either in white or black. This is Apple's second mobile phone and is similar to the original iPhone in size and features, however the iPhone 3G also includes fast 3G wireless technology, Maps with GPS, support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange and the new App Store. The model number on the back case is A1324 on the iPhone 3G (China) and A1241 on the iPhone 3G, the back case is made of plastic, the imprint on the back of the phone is less shiny than the Apple logo above it, the serial number is printed on the SIM tray. * Please note that the iPhone 3G has grey text on the rear case, the iPhone 3GS does not.

iPhone 3GS
The iPhone 3GS comes in 8GB,16GB and 32GB varieties and looks incredibly similar to the iPhone 3G, however, Apple have made some improvements to the iPhones hardware. The iPhone 3GS has a faster processor than its predecessor, a 3 megapixel video camera and an inbuilt compass. The model number on the back case is A1325 on the iPhone 3GS (China) and A1303 on the iPhone 3GS, the back case is made of plastic, the imprint on the back case is the same bright and shiny silver as the Apple logo, the serial number is printed on the SIM tray. * Please note that the iPhone 3GS has silver text on the rear casing, the iPhone 3G does not. |

iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 is a candybar style smartphone designed and developed by Apple. It is the fourth generation of iPhone, and successor to the iPhone 3GS. It is particularly marketed for video calling, and consumption of media such as movies, music, games and for general web and e-mail access. The iPhone 4 comes in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities, in either white or black and is approximately 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS Model. The model number on the back cover is A1349 on the iPhone 4 (CDMA model) and A1332 on the iPhone 4 (GSM model). The front and back surfaces are flat and made of glass. There is a stainless steel band around the edges. The volume up and down buttons are marked with a "+" and "-" sign. The GSM model has a micro-SIM tray on the right side that holds a micro-SIM card. The CDMA model does not have a SIM tray.

iPhone 4S
The iPhone 4S is a touchscreen smartphone developed by Apple Inc. It is the fifth generation of the iPhone and retains the exterior design of the iPhone 4, but is host to a range of improved hardware specifications and software updates. The phone added a voice recognition system known as Siri. The iPhone 4S comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, in either white or black. The model number on the back cover is A1431 on the iPhone 4S (GSM China) and A1387 on the iPhone 4S. The front and back surfaces are flat and made of glass. There is a stainless steel band around the edges. The volume up and down buttons are marked with a "+" and "-" sign. There is micro-SIM tray on the right side that holds a micro-SIM card.

iPhone 5
The iPhone 5 is a touchscreen candybar style smartphone developed by Apple Inc. It is the sixth generation of the iPhone and the first to support a 4 inch screen, 8 megapixel camera and a faster CPU. The iPhone 5 comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, in either white or slate. The model number on the back cover is A1428 on the iPhone 5 (GSM) and A1429 on the iPhone 5 (GSM and CDMA models). The back housing is made of anodized aluminum. The front surface is flat and made of glass. There is a SIM tray on the right side that holds a "fourth form factor" (4FF) or "nano-SIM" card.
